Several of our members attended the Rhinebeck Car Show in Rhinebeck, New York this year. It was an enjoyable time in spite of the poor weather. We lasted as long as possible and finally the WPRAACA contingent left early on Sunday afternoon due to the relentless rain.
Fast forward several weeks and I was very surprised to find a large first class postage package in my mail. The box contained an award presented to me for my 1941 Super Deluxe Ford! I had no idea that I had won and additionally I did not know what class my car was competing in. Upon our arrival at the show grounds the organizers just direct you where to park. Nothing is mentioned about classifications. Joe Doyle, one of the event organizers, explained that classifications depend on how many and what kinds of cars show up. The classes are created after the cars are all registered so they can categorize them accordingly. If only a few cars show up in a particular group they will combine it with another.
Joe told me that my car took first place in the in the class for all makes from 1940 to 1948. He also commented “BTW, I have a 1941 Ford Woodie. It was not there this year as it was still in storage”.
On a more local note, I went for the first time to a car show at Dan's restaurant on Sunday, 6/25/17. Dan’s is on route 102 in Exeter Rhode Island. The show is run by the Cowboy Cruisers. They hold their shows at different places each time I was told. That makes it quite interesting. The next car show will be held at the Portuguese Club off of route 44 in Smithfield. It will be what they call a Super Car Show. They have 3-4 super shows per year. When visiting their web site click on Super Shows at the top left of the screen. The shows are run very well and the trophies and door prizes are liberal. At the Super Shows, as you will see, the car winners get cash and the raffle prizes are very generous. They give away things such as cooking grills, etcetera. During my first visit to one of their shows I even won a top 22 award for my Ford. Two outstanding and rather rare cars were at the show, a 1968 Rebel SST AMC convertible and a Ford Falcon Rancheo.
